Steve Cheney¶
Howdy! I am a Masters Student at Brandeis completing my MSc in Bioinformatics. My undergraduate Alma Mater is Pitt, where I got my BSc in Computational Biology in 2022. I am all about being the middle-man between biologists and computer scientists, translating nature into code.
My role¶
I am a Developer here at OASCI. TODO: find and update my OASCI specific role

Working style¶
Team player!
Technical interests¶
Software development
I started undergrad planning on doing a CS degree before I fell in love with biology. I am much more technically and analytically aligned in solving problems. My main language is Python, with experience in Java, C, and SQL (and a little bit of JS). You can take a look at my github repos here.
Computer-aided drug discovery
My first introduction to Computer-aided drug discovery was through Dr. Durrant's capstone course at Pitt. I fell in love with the concept of using computational tools to narrow the search for pharmaceuticals. My senior paper dived into potential HSP110 ligand analogs that could mitigate colorectal cancer.
Weaknesses¶
Can get a little hyper-focused on non-neccessities
Strengths¶
Picks up on new topics quickly, teaching, jargonless explanations, collaboration
Beyond work¶
Bits in Bio¶
I run a monthly Journal Club for a professional community in the Comp Bio, Bioinformatics, AI, Biology, and Software space. It's a great spot to connect with others about these topics, and definitely check out the JC! There's lots of resources for learning, discussions, events, and a job board. - Website - Slack - Journal Club Info
Music¶
I have been playing the double bass since 2011 all throughout school and now play in a local orchestra that puts on community concerts 5 times a year. Fun fact, I have played at Carnegie Hall twice! I also played bass guitar in a few punk bands in college \m/
Content Development¶
I am a content developer doing graphic design for a GTA V FiveM community. I create vehicle liveries, patches, and other artwork to be put into game.
Art¶
- I do freelance work creating patches and logos for Fire, EMS, and Police departments and emergency services enthusiasts.
- I also occasionally do some creative coding.
